Computer Science University League Tables Explained

There is no single ranking of computer science universities, and that catches students out. Four or five well-known tables exist, they often put different universities on top, and each one is measuring something different. Once you understand what each table rewards, the disagreements make sense and you can use them properly. This page explains the main ones without reprinting anyone’s table; for our own approach see the ranking methodology.

The global tables: QS and THE

The two big international rankings both publish a computer science subject table, and both lean heavily on research and reputation. QS builds its computer science ranking from five indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, an H-index measure of research output, and an international research network score. The weightings are tuned per subject rather than fixed, but the two reputation surveys carry a lot of the result, and QS is unusual in scoring employer reputation as its own measure.

Times Higher Education uses five pillars for its computer science table. For the 2026 edition these are teaching at 26.5 per cent, research environment at 29 per cent, research quality at 27.5 per cent, industry at 8 per cent and international outlook at 7.5 per cent. Research therefore makes up well over half the score. That is why research-intensive universities dominate both tables, and it is the same reason we cite these rankings on our best UK universities page.

The UK tables: Complete University Guide and the Guardian

Domestic tables tell a different story because they focus on the student. The Complete University Guide scores computer science on about six measures drawn from national data: entry standards, student satisfaction from the National Student Survey, research quality from the Research Excellence Framework, continuation, and graduate prospects. Research counts, but alongside entry grades, satisfaction and outcomes rather than dominating them.

The Guardian goes furthest in this direction and leaves research out altogether. Its computer science and IT table is a teaching and outcomes ranking, built from teaching and feedback satisfaction, staff-student ratio, spend per student, average entry tariff, a value-added score that compares results against entry grades, continuation, and career prospects fifteen months after graduation. Because it ignores research reputation, universities that teach well or place graduates well can rank far higher here than in QS or THE.

Why they disagree, and one more table

Put those side by side and the pattern is clear. Global tables reward research reputation and citations, so the familiar research elite rises to the top. UK tables reward student experience and graduate outcomes, so the order reshuffles and some universities outside the traditional top group climb. A fourth option, CSRankings, ignores both reputation and teaching and simply counts each department’s publications at the most selective computer science conferences, which produces yet another ordering. None is wrong; they answer different questions.

How to use them sensibly

Start from what you actually care about. If you want to do research or a PhD, the research-weighted tables and CSRankings are informative. If you care about being taught well and getting a good graduate job, the Guardian and the outcomes data inside the Complete University Guide matter more. Read the methodology before you trust a number, because a university can be twentieth on one table and fifth on another for entirely legitimate reasons.

Then treat the tables as a shortlist tool, not a verdict. Once you have a handful of universities, look past the rank to the things a table cannot capture: the course content, the modules on offer, location, and the specific graduate outcomes for that department.
