Computer Science Scholarships and Financial Aid: A Student Guide

A computer science degree leads to some of the best-paid work around, but the sticker price of getting there scares off plenty of people who would do well in the field. Most of them are paying more than they need to. Between government aid, company-funded scholarships and university money, a lot of the cost can come off before you borrow a penny.

Start with the FAFSA

For any student in the US, the first move is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA. It costs nothing to submit and it is what opens the door to federal grants, work-study and low-interest federal loans. Grants are the part you never repay. The main one is the Federal Pell Grant, worth up to $7,395 for the 2025-26 award year if you have the greatest financial need. File it as early as you can each year, since some aid runs out once it is claimed, and renew it every year you are studying.

Scholarships aimed at computer science students

Computing has an unusually deep bench of named scholarships, partly because tech companies want more people entering the field. A few of the larger ones:

Do not stop at the famous ones. Smaller local and university-specific awards attract far fewer applicants, so your odds are better, and several small scholarships add up to the same money as one big one. Treat applications like a numbers game, reuse your essays where you can, and put every deadline in a calendar the day you find it.

Financial aid for international students

The federal system mostly does not cover international students. If you are on an F-1 or J-1 visa and are neither a US citizen nor an eligible noncitizen, which covers green card holders, refugees and asylees, you cannot draw Pell Grants or federal loans. What is open to you is the university’s own money. Institutional scholarships are often the single largest source of funding for international undergraduates, and plenty of private awards ask nothing about citizenship. Read each university’s aid pages closely, because policies vary a lot from one to the next.

Bringing down the cost of applying

Applying is not free either, and the fees pile up fast when you send off a dozen applications. Students from lower-income households can sidestep most of them. Qualify for an SAT fee waiver, the free or reduced-price lunch programme, or a Pell Grant, and both the SAT and the Common App drop their charges, with most universities waiving their own application fee on top. Nobody should skip a good course because the entry fee felt out of reach.

The UK and elsewhere

Outside the US the model changes. In the UK, most support comes through Student Finance rather than scholarships: the government lends you the tuition, and you repay it as a graduate tax once you earn above a set threshold. Universities then layer bursaries and merit scholarships over that. Even the cheaper online routes carry some aid; the University of London’s online BSc Computer Science, for example, costs well below its campus version and still runs a handful of scholarships and bursaries.

Whichever country you are in, work out the real cost after aid before you rule anything out, and weigh it against where a top department can take you and the salaries the degree leads to.
