University of Sussex

The University of Sussex was the first of Britain’s “plate glass” universities, granted its royal charter in August 1961. Built on a parkland campus at Falmer, just outside Brighton, it was designed from the start to cross traditional subject boundaries, and that interdisciplinary streak still runs through its science and engineering.

Computer science is taught in the Department of Informatics, part of the School of Engineering and Informatics. Sussex has a long reputation in the more cognitive and adaptive corners of the field, and current teaching and research cover machine learning and neural networks, human-computer interaction and interaction design, robotics, computer vision, and text mining. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), the department reported that all of its research impact in computer science and informatics was judged world-leading or internationally excellent. The degree is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

For a computer science student, Sussex offers a compact campus close to Brighton and a department small enough to feel personal, with teaching that leans towards building working systems rather than pure theory. Applicants are not expected to arrive with programming experience.

Admissions

The typical offer for the BSc Computer Science is in the range ABB to BBB at A-level. Applicants also need GCSE mathematics at grade 6/B, though the department will consider grade 5 for those taking a relevant A-level such as computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry.
