Stanford ranks among the top ten universities in the world for computer science in the QS 2026 subject rankings. Founded in 1885 in what is now Silicon Valley, it has a claim few others can match: the companies built by its students and faculty helped create the modern technology industry that sits on its doorstep.

The Computer Science Department was established in 1965 and has been central to the field ever since, with particular strength in artificial intelligence through the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
