Who Invented the Internet?
No single person invented the internet, and the internet is not the same thing as the web. The internet is the global network that connects computers; it grew out of ARPANET in the late 1960s and became the modern internet when it adopted the TCP/IP protocols on 1 January 1983. The World Wide Web, which most people actually mean when they say the internet, was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.
The network came first. ARPANET, funded by the United States defence research agency, sent its first message between two university computers in 1969. Through the 1970s, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn designed TCP/IP, the set of rules that lets separate networks join into one. Because those protocols are what makes the internet a single global network, Cerf and Kahn are often called the fathers of the internet.
The web came later, and it is what turned the internet into something ordinary people used every day. Working at CERN in 1989, Tim Berners-Lee proposed a system of pages linked by hyperlinks, reachable through a browser. The first website went live in 1991. Within a few years the web had spread worldwide.
So the internet was built by many hands over decades, while the web that runs on it has a clearer single inventor in Tim Berners-Lee.
